Vega, andata e ritorno

Sunday, November 23rd, 2008
Janvs - VEGA Artist: Janvs
Album: Vega
Released: October 6, 2008
myspace

Random Moments…

Sunday, November 9th, 2008

I unfortunately had to cancel my previously planned weekend in Grosseto to visit an old university friend. We had studied abroad together in Rome and while the rest of us traveled Europe or went back to the states after the program finished, she stayed in Italy, fell in love with an Italian and has now been married 4 years and is a proud mother of an adorable brown eyed little boy.

Suddenly with no plans, I decided to go out to the Fashion Show event on Friday and accompany the 15 year old girl, who’s sister I nanny for, to get tickets for the upcoming Ligabue concert. Little did I know that the process would last ALL night. Sleep deprivation was already weighing down on me like a wet shirt clinging to my body from going out the night before. I was tired, but I had made a promise, and it was something that I knew would make her happy so I couldn’t back out.

For those who don’t know, Ligabue is a famous Italian singer, and moreover, a famous singer from Correggio, the town that I am living in. Since it is a small city (around 20k) the town’s theater is small as well and only holds around 300 people. Each person could buy 2 tickets, so that left only 150 people, of the thousands of crazed fans, to be able to purchase tickets for next Sunday’s concert. It wasn’t as easy as staking a camping site out in front of the door, and arriving to find your place reserved the next morning when the ticket doors opened at 10a.m. Instead, each ticket holder needed to check in every 2 hours starting at 3pm (or whenever the 150 tickets sold out) and 3 hours at 1a.m.

5p.m. check in: There was excitement in the air as fans looked around at each other, curious to see who else would be attending the concert.

7p.m. check in: The beautiful afternoon turned to grey skies and rain, the crowd hunched under umbrellas as a man called our names. Our sleeping bags, which we had laid outside on the sidewalk by the door, were moved to the car where we would be spending the night (mind you we could have walked the 5 minutes home, but where was the sense of random adventure in that?).

9p.m. check in: We stood under tarps that were set up, and were excited for our names to be called, we were starving and it was finally time for dinner. Late. Italian time.

11p.m.: The street was waking up as people finished dinner and headed to a locali (not a bar, as in Italy, that means a coffee shop) or the gelateria for heavenly Italian ice cream.

1a.m.: Music drifted in the streets from the busy localis and bars, people of all ages walked the streets, the smell of coffee was in the air and the shouts of drunken laughter could be heard from nearly any corner in the center.

4a.m.: Managed to get about an hour of sleep in the car where I was layered up in 3 sweaters, a hat, gloves and a sleeping bag, but annoyed to be wakened after finally drifting off and to have to leave the warm cacoon I had made for myself. All the crazy fans, looked at each other with sleepy eyes, laughing to themselves WHY WHY WHY were they standing outside, shivering, at 4 a.m. in the morning…

7a.m: All I want to do is to check in, and go back to bed until 9a.m.–hoping that I could get at least a few more hours of sleep. I’m tired.

7:30a.m.: Rules have changed. Instead of checking in at 9a.m., the ticket holders have to line up until the doors open at 10a.m. I am really really tired. I’m annoyed. One shot of espresso and a cup of hot peach tea later, I am more content. I read the newspaper in line as the sun rises, and the streets wake up. The end is finally in sight.

10:00: The line begins to move. Whahoo!!! I am number 56….

10:32: With our four tickets in hand, we make one pass through the center and head home, thoughts of my warm comfy bed fill my head like a sweet dream…something that I will be doing momentarily.

Is Ligabue worth the night of sporadic sleep, freezing outside in line, too many coffees and wasting Sunday’s beautiful blue skied day catching up on zzz’s? I could be extremely annoyed. I mean, why all the hurdles for a mere ticket? Either let me buy the ticket or not. End of story.

Would that be a story I would want to read? Definitely not. Life is about the random adventures. And, although I definitely could have found something better to do with my time than being roped around like a bunch of chained monkeys, would it be as memorable? One can only have so many dinners at a restaurant or drinks at a bar/locali, before they all seem to run together and become an “ordinary” weekly occurrence.

Life is sometimes about the moments you hate, then turn to love because they were different from your ordinary day. They were unique. They make you happy when you feel sad. They affirm your sense of adventure on days you feel old and boring. And, the best part for me, is that at anytime of day or night, just the thought of these moments puts a slight smile on my face or a soft laugh in my throat as I ask myself, “WHAT….was I thinking…”

Mystery

Saturday, October 25th, 2008

At the start of my stay, I’ve experienced a very weird evening. Don’t get me wrong, nothing paranormal, just the kind of situation in which you wonder how you actually turned up to be there.

First of all, let’s set up the context. I had just arrived in Turin; it was literally my first day there. As I was alone, I decided to go for a little walk in the city and see what happens. Good for me, apparently, some street events have been announced.

Here I am, on the very large and quite crowded Piazza Vittorio Veneto (you’re going to hear me a lot on that square!), when I notice a stage equipped with giant screens: there is going to be a gig tonight. I’m quite happy about that and I decided to stay here and wait patiently the beginning of the concert.

The singer finally appeared on stage about 20 minutes late (what else?), stylish haircut, vocal strings warmed up and amplifiers set on max.  She started with three songs and then shouted the usual and expected “Hello Turin!” insuring herself even more support from an already enthusiastic audience.

The show was going on, and the band played, some kind of average pop-rock FM and cheesy ballads: pure contemporary Italian music (and believe me that is no compliment). But the fans here were having way too much fun to bother about the genuine quality of the music. They knew every single song by heart. Couples were tenderly hugging themselves while the dramatic tension of the gig reached its maximum. No doubt is permitted anymore: it must be an Italian superstar singing in front of me.

Of course I had absolutely no idea about her identity and I was probably the only one here not to appreciate the magnificence of the moment, as I was standing in the middle of all the Italian fans thrilled in front of so much “talent”.

This is the perfect example of the loneliness of the Frenchman freshly arrived in Italy. But at least I enjoyed another show: watching the audience, I could really spot the cultural gap between us. Music plays such a big part in our cultures.

However, after 40 minutes, my ears just had too much of this, and I went home.

Oh and by the way, I never found the name of the singer. Wasn’t written anywhere.

talky blog #2 | foreigner in italy

Monday, October 20th, 2008

Every now and then you´ll find films that put their storyline set in Italy. It´s always however a very romantic - and I´ld say totally untrue picture of what life will be like for you as a foreigner in Italy.

“The talented Mr Ripley” Who wouldn´t want to live in Italy after this movie!? Living the good life (la dolce vita) in Italy, enjoying the jazz of life. Of course the story is supposed to be from the 50s, but that in itself isn´t such a big deal. Italy hasn´t changed much since then anyway. And in some ways this is what is attractive about Italy. Its history. You go back in time when entering this country, which is a fact. However, this is not necessarily a good thing. Dickie does live on his daddy´s American Express, and to get a life like him, you better make sure your daddy´s credit card has no limit…

“Under the Tuscan sun” An american woman travels to Italy after her divorce, she decides to buy a house in Tuscany and have it renovated. You meet all the people who help her out. Yeah right… First of all, she never learns italian and she would get nowhere with speaking english here, with or without money. Secondly, you never get to see her lining up at the different government offices where she has to fill out countless numbers of forms to get her documents right to be allowed to stay legally. Being an american, I´m not so sure it would go through. Even with a EUpassport - and all the rights to live here - it´s difficult to get it through.

And one thing that both these films have in common is that neither of them work in Italy, and there´s probably a very good reason for that. First all the trouble you have to go through to get a job. Secondly all the shitty conditions you´ld have to keep up with, taking your rights as an employee back at least 150 years. And most likely your paycheck too. If they had to work, the stories in the movies would probably only be about the problems connected to this.

So if you´re hinking about going to live in Italy, just be away that these romantic films have nothing to do about reality in Italy.

Here´s my talky blog #2, where I complain even more about Italy, but also enjoy the good parts about Italy. Like my roofterrace where this is filmed. Getting your life organized as a foreigner here is a hassle, and you´ll have to fight and keep your mood up for a long time before you have the possibility to come close to where you would start in just about any other country. I do still believe in living in Italy, but I sure still have a long way to go before being organized. For this reason, expect there to be some complaining:)
